October 2024 Member Meeting Highlights

Highlights of the October 1, 2024, Membership Meeting

The regularly scheduled monthly member meeting of the Mill Creek Rifle Club was called to order by President Michael Borkon at 7:31 p.m., October 1, 2024, in the Clubhouse. In attendance were approximately 15 members, eight board members, and guest Mike Thompson, Kansas State Senator for the 10th District. A quorum was present. Senator Thompson began the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and comments regarding the current state of Kansas politics.

In officer reports:

  • President Michael Borkon discussed the current tree trimming across several ranges and thanked members for their patience. He reported the success of the recent Johnson County Sheriff's benefit match to support Kansas Special Olympics. Mr. Borkon reported the new club charitable foundation raised more than $60,000 to support youth shooting and other charitable causes in its first benefit auction. He also announced the club's first Will Sisson Memorial Military Match November 2.
  • Vice President John Morgan reminded members to check the Events and Range Calendar for range availability before coming out to the club.
  • Treasurer Brad Thomas reported that as of August 31, the club showed a gain over expenses of about $106,000, $26,000 lower than last year's, due predominantly to higher expenses. He reported the club is on track to meet fiscal year budgets, while maintaining strong emergency and capital reserves.
  • Membership Director Curt Cotton presented one candidate for membership induction. Motion to accept the new member was passed unanimously.
  • Construction Director John Krudwig reported progress toward completing proposed improvements to the new ranges.
  • Law Enforcement Liaison Jennifer Gibson updated members on existing law enforcement contracts for range use.
  • Public Relations Director Mike Smith reminded members to use the Contact Information tab on the club website to provide feedback, ask questions, register complaints, or offer any other information to the board of directors.
  • Legislative Director Paul Day introduced Senator Thompson prior to his presentation. He also reminded members to register to vote and to exercise their franchise this November.

In new business:

  •  Mr. Borkon thanked Ron Stricker of Ron Stricker's Auctions for his support of the recent club benefit auction. He asked members to patronize Mr. Stricker's auctions, including the upcoming firearms auction on Octobr 2.
