Introduction to AR begins in April
Mill Creek Rifle Club announces an Introduction to AR Competitive Shooting class, followed by an AR open match, coming to the club April 11.
The introduction to AR class will cover the basics of the AR rifle platform, including takedown, cleaning, different AR platforms, shooting styles, elevation, wind reading, and reloading. Designed to introduce beginners to a solid foundation in the safe handling, operation, and maintenance of the AR platform, it will also be ideal for AR enthusiasts looking to refresh their knowledge.
Class will begin at 9 a.m. Saturday April 11 in the Clubhouse. Discussion will include:
- Range safety and procedures: A quick review on firearm safe handling, range commands, safe muzzle control, and more.
- Terminology and Function: Identifying parts unique to the AR platform and understanding their operation.
- Maintenance: How to field-strip, clean, and properly lubricate the rifle to ensure reliability.
- Shooting Fundamentals: Proper stance, grip, sight alignment, and trigger control.
- Practice in Manipulation: Safe practice in loading, unloading, and clearing basic malfunctions like double feeds and stovepipes.
- Sighting and Zeroing: Understanding how to zero the sights at different distances.
- And more.
Following the class and a short break, we will carry out an AR open match at 10:30 a.m. You do not have to attend the class to shoot in the open match.
The AR open match take place from the prone position at 200 yards on the High Power Range. A 20 minute period of unlimited sighters will be followed by 10 shots for record--all single loaded--and then 10 shots in rapid fire involving one magazine change. Categories will include iron sights, optical sights, tactical AR and match rifle AR.
Entry fee is $10 for the class and $10 to enter the match. Juniors under age 21 are free to enter both the class and open match. Cash awards will be given for each of the categories.
To enter the match, please have your rifle zeroed to at least 100 yards to begin with. For those who do not have a zero elevation on a rifle, we will get you set up during the class beforehand. Bring eye and ear protection and a shooting mat.
